Bạn đang xem: Maine’s Community Solar Boom Delivers Clean Energy and Savings
Maine’s renewable energy landscape continues to evolve, with five new community solar farms now operational across the state, producing nearly 25 megawatts (MW) of clean energy. These projects, managed by Ampion Renewable Energy, provide tangible benefits for the environment and electricity consumers, generating over 28 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy annually while offering subscribers significant cost savings.
The solar farms in Franklin, Aroostook, Penobscot, and Washington counties support customers in Versant Power and Central Maine Power territories. Ampion has successfully enrolled 1,700 residential and 70 commercial subscribers, offering participants up to 15% savings on their electricity bills while contributing to Maine’s renewable energy goals.
Supporting Maine’s Clean Energy Transition
Ampion CEO and founder Nate Owen, a Maine native, expressed pride in his company’s contribution to the state’s energy future. “Community solar is an invaluable program that provides Mainers with many benefits,” Owen said. “It bolsters the local economy, improves grid resilience, and is available to all types of electricity consumers.”

Founded in Bar Harbor in 2014, Ampion has grown into a key player in community solar, managing subscriptions for 48 projects across Maine with a total capacity of over 215 MW. The company plans to expand its presence in Maine, where about 10% of its employees reside. “As a company with roots in Maine, we are thrilled to bring clean energy and savings to Maine electricity consumers,” Owen added.
Bringing Solar Savings to Communities
The benefits of these community solar projects extend beyond individual savings. By connecting local organizations like The Highlands, a senior living community in Topsham, Maine, Ampion fosters greater community participation in the state’s clean energy efforts.
“We feel good about supporting local jobs and helping to make more clean energy available to the grid, all while helping our community members save money on electricity,” said Troy Chapman, Operations Director at The Highlands.
Maine’s Ambitious Renewable Goals
Maine is positioning itself as a leader in renewable energy, focusing strongly on solar. As of late 2024, the state boasts 1,415 MW of installed solar capacity, with projections to add another 1,581 MW in the next five years. These community solar projects are crucial to achieving those goals, helping diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
A Bright Future for Maine’s Clean Energy Leadership
Maine’s clean energy progress reflects a strategic blend of leveraging natural resources, innovative policies, and a strong economic vision. Renewable energy accounts for 67% of the state’s electricity generation, ranking Maine among national leaders. Hydropower dominates the renewable mix at 44%, with wind energy contributing 27%—an impressive 70% of all wind-powered electricity in New England. Biomass and solar energy further diversify the energy portfolio, highlighting Maine’s commitment to resource efficiency and sustainability.
The clean energy sector fuels Maine’s power grid and economy. Employing over 15,000 workers, this industry represents a growing 3% of the state’s Gross State Product, contributing $2.31 billion in 2022. Policies such as the 100% clean energy goal by 2040 and advancements in offshore wind projects are set to propel Maine’s energy leadership further.
As Maine progresses toward its renewable energy targets, community solar stands out as a powerful tool for delivering clean energy and financial relief to its residents.
“We’re not just generating clean energy; we’re building stronger, more resilient communities,” Owen emphasized. “That’s the real power of community solar.”
