Jonathan Del Collo seeks third term as Berks County Prothonotary, citing innovations and savings

Berks County Prothonotary Jonathan K. Del Collo has announced that he is running for re-election to a third term as the Berks County Prothonotary.

Since taking office in 2018, Prothonotary Del Collo has assembled a top-notch management team that under his direction has worked diligently to streamline all office operations to make it as user friendly as possible while cutting operating expenses. Because of the efficiencies he has instituted, Del Collo eliminated thirteen staff positions, mostly through attrition, which have resulted in savings to Berks County taxpayers of $2.3 million dollars since first being elected to this office. The reduction in staffing has not negatively impacted the functioning of his office.

In an effort to continue improving the functioning of office operations as the keeper of all Civil Court records, in 2025 Del Collo will be embracing new technologies and implementing an entirely new state-of-the-art e-filing and case management system that will lead to even greater efficiencies and a much more improved customer and filing experience than the current antiquated system.

Del Collo, who has a deep appreciation of the history of Berks County, has made strides in permanently safe-guarding the 270+ years-worth of historical records his office is legally required to maintain and has done so in the most cost-effective manner. To date, over 950,000 pages of historical records have been digitized, including all the genealogically significant Naturalization Records. His efforts have again resulted in saving taxpayers money while at the same time making them more accessible to researchers.

Under Del Collo’s oversight, the Prothonotary’s Office has had a complete makeover, with a new research room being created within the office as well as improved seating and ease of access to the office. Prothonotary Del Collo also is proud that his entire office for both staff and customers is now fully handicapped accessible, something that was a priority for him as the office makeover was performed.

The Historical Images Gallery he installed in May of 2019 in the hallway outside his office on the second floor of the Berks County Courthouse continues to generate interest from visitors, customers and researchers with plans to add more images in the next years. That gallery boasts enlarged reproductions of photographs of the Courthouse, the Prothonotary’s Office and downtown Reading dating from the 1930’s.

Although Del Collo enjoys preserving and protecting the rich history of both his office and this County, he is a forward-thinking innovator who seeks to make his office as accessible to the taxpayers and customers as possible. He created a mobile app for the office which was the first of its kind in Pennsylvania in 2019. That app is available at the Apple App store and the Google Play store and continues to allow customers to remain in contact with the office 24/7. It proved particularly useful with the dissemination of updates and other important information during the COVID-19 Pandemic andcontinues to give updates on office closures and other important information.

In addition to receiving alerts from the Prothonotary’s Office, customers use the app to send messages directly to Prothonotary Del Collo, search records and retrieve other important information.

Prior to winning his first election in 2017, Del Collo served as Chief Deputy Prothonotary for 11+ years and Acting Prothonotary for over a year. He was re-elected to a second term in 2021. In his third term, Del Collo looks to continue to bring innovative yet cost-effective solutions to all functions of his office. While modernization is an on-going goal, ease of accessibility to both his staff and his records will continue to be the overriding aim.
