Stateline utility companies give tips on saving money, energy in the winter

(WIFR) – There is still enough time to prevent the high winter bills from ending up in your mailbox.

“Any time it gets so brutal cold, you want to make sure that you’re comfortable and you’re safe,” says the external affair manager at ComEd, George Gaulrapp.

Gaulrapp says keeping your home around 68 degrees is enough to be safe and comfortable and to make meaningful savings on the electric bill.

“It could be up to 20% on your bill, just depending on the size of your home,” says Gaulrapp.

Jonas Berberich is the communications director at the Janesville-based Rock Energy Cooperative. He says there are many low to no cost ways to keep your bill down this season, such as checking for leaks around doors and windows, keeping your window blinds open, or getting a programmed thermostat.

“What you can do with that is set the temperature so that when you are sleeping at night are away from your home that the temperature be lower in your house, therefore you’re not using as much energy,” says Berberich.

Gaulrapp also adds it is important to keep an eye on your family and community during those times.

“If you do have an elderly neighbor or relative, make sure you do a check on them just to make sure everything is good with them. Make sure their furnace is working, that they have enough food supply and things like that, just as a common courtesy,” says Gaulrapp.
